Schema Therapy
You probably have not heard of a lot of therapists who provide Schema Therapy.
Schema therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps people who may not experience or benefit from other forms of therapy. For those with longstanding, negative patterns of thinking and acting, schema therapy encourages them to recognize and dispute these themes (called schemas or life traps) to feel better and function well in society. (1)
Schema Therapy is practiced all over the world and is a widely used theoretical framework for therapists. In the US, other models seem to be more popular, however, I have found that schema work to be the most effective treatment modality since I have been in the field since 1992.
Schema therapy incorporates components from attachment theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, and a variety of other approaches.
Schema psychotherapy can assist you to understand your underlying and persisting thoughts and behavior patterns which may often cause you difficulties. We will work together to explore emotions, unhelpful coping mechanisms, and the root causes of relational problems and create better coping mechanisms.
Schemas develop during the course of our lives from our living environment, experiences growing up, genetics, and attachments.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a short-term, problem-focused form of behavioral treatment that helps people see the difference between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and free them from unhelpful patterns of behavior.
CBT is grounded in the belief that it is a person’s perception of events – rather than the events themselves – that determines how he or she will feel and act in response.
With CBT, you’ll be able to adjust the thoughts that directly influence your emotions and behavior. This adjustment process is referred to as cognitive reconstructing, which happens through different CBT techniques.
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps people recover from traumatic life situations. Studies suggest that EMDR treatment can provide patients with the advantages of psychotherapy that took years to achieve.
Severe emotional distress is said to take a long time to recover. EMDR treatment reveals that psychological trauma may heal like physical trauma. Your body heals hand cuts. The wound festers and hurts if irritated by foreign objects or repeated injuries. Healing resumes after removing the barrier. EMDR shows that mental processes follow a similar pattern. Brain information processing favors mental wellness. If a disturbing occurrence blocks or imbalances the system, the emotional wound festers and causes tremendous agony. Healing resumes after removing the barrier. Clinicians assist clients to heal using EMDR treatment protocols and procedures.
