About This Resource: This page explores schema perpetuation, the process by which early maladaptive schemas maintain themselves well past the point they’re useful. Once a schema forms in childhood, it doesn’t simply fade when circumstances change — instead, it recruits selective attention, memory bias, and self-defeating behaviors to keep generating “evidence” that confirms the original belief. This resource walks clients through the mechanisms of schema maintenance, including cognitive distortions, schema-driven behaviors, and avoidance patterns, so they can recognize these cycles in their own lives and begin to interrupt them.
