About This Resource: This interactive worksheet is based on Dr. Dan Siegel’s River of Integration, a metaphor from interpersonal neurobiology for the healthy middle path between two unhealthy extremes: rigidity (the riverbank of excessive control, avoidance, or numbness) and chaos (the riverbank of overwhelm, impulsivity, or emotional flooding). Integration — the flexible, adaptive flow down the center of the river — reflects Siegel’s well-known “window of tolerance.” Clients use this tool to locate where they are on the river in the moment, notice which edge they tend to drift toward under stress, and practice small, concrete steps back toward flow.
