About This Resource: This page hosts the Schema Mode Inventory (SMI 1.1), a 124-item self-assessment developed by Young, Arntz, Atkinson, Lobbestael, Weishaar, van Vreeswijk, and Klokman (2008) at the Schema Therapy Institute. The SMI measures the frequency of 14 schema modes across four categories: vulnerable child modes, maladaptive coping modes, dysfunctional parent modes, and the healthy adult mode. Clients complete the rating scale, which takes approximately 25–30 minutes, to build a personal Mode Profile showing which modes are most active in their day-to-day emotional life. Results are for educational and reflective purposes and are intended to support — not replace — work with a licensed therapist. A client psychoeducation resource from Stafford & Associates Counseling.
